USS Silversides - Muskegon, Michigan
April 2002
It isn't every day that I have the chance to spend the night in a submarine, so when Matthew's
Cub Scout Pack arranged such a venture, Matt and I jumped at the chance. We joined about thirty other
boys (and nearly as many parents) for a day and night of history, fun, and claustrophobia.
The lucky vessel was the distinguished U.S.S. Silversides,
one of the most decorated submarines from World War II. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, since
my only experiences concerning submarines involved a television screen. All-in-all, I thought the
sub looked bigger than I thought from the outside, and smaller than I thought from the inside. I'm
not the type to get claustrophobic, but I'm not sure I would have been a good candidate for long-term
service on a sub.
Matt and all the boys had a lot of fun playing soldier and exploring the ship. We all liked the small
museum situated adjacent to the sub. Apparently there is a two year waiting list to secure a night
on the Silversides, but I'm hoping we can do it again before Matt gets out of Cub Scouts.
